AIKIDO

Aikido is a modern martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba.  O-Sensei, as he is commonly referred to, combined his vast knowledge of both armed and unarmed combat as well as his spiritual beliefs to create one of the most commonly practiced martial arts in the world made famous by movie stars such as Steven Segal

As practitioners, we examine the art of countering an attack by using our assailant's force against them.    This can be manifested through direct (irimi) or indirect (tenkan) action culminating in a throw, joint lock, or submission.

Traditional weapons such as the wooden sword (bokken), knife (tanto), and short staff (jo) are integral to the study and understanding of Aikido.  When thinking about weapons training, O-Sensei said, "It is necessary to develop a strategy that utilizes all the physical conditions and elements that are directly at hand. The best strategy relies upon an unlimited set of responses."
